Family Ties, 2023
Exploring the dynamics of authority within a family structure, I collect words and phrases from dialogue sequences and remove them from their previous context to create new narratives. To find these elements, I look towards my childhood; an inheritance of stories of superheroes and their tragic existences, fictional lives which echoed the conflicts of reality. Positioned through their words, I project nuances of love, conflict, identity, and family as I fabricate imagined conversations between my parents and my inner and outer voices.
Remaining Drive Ins (PA)
This collaborative project between myself and Julia Reber came about as a response to a night spent at the Mahoning Drive-In, one of the few remaining 35mm projector drive-ins in the US. The turnout to a theater that was so adamant about preserving methods of the past that questions of change, nostalgia, and Americana stuck with me months after leaving this space.
October 2023 gave opportunity for a 10-day road trip across Pennsylvania to document all remaining drive-ins signs, a reflection of cultural relevancy and community importance to those who fiercely support these spaces’ existence. While actively being used, these lots appear as if they haven’t seen life for weeks. Being in these spaces during the off season begs the questions - what happens to places when we no longer need them? Do they hold the same nostalgic memories of late nights in the heat with sound whispering from every angle, as the cars create a chorus of dialogue that matches the size of the screen the visuals are projected on?

Ascension
Drawn to the intricate geometry found in the world of architecture, I reflect my fascination through the interplay of lines, planes of focus, and perspective. Through my lens, I contemplate the beauty and complexity of the built environment and the relationship between structure and its surroundings.

bio
Born in Salisbury, Maryland and raised in York, Pennsylvania, Jacob Gottloeb attends Tyler School of Art and Architecture, receiving his BFA in 2024. Accepting photography as more than a hobby after graduating high school, Gottloeb branched into multiple mediums, picking and choosing what would help him best mimic the art he grew up admiring. Working in lens based media, video, and sculptural installation, he explores the dynamics of authority, interpersonal relationships, and inherited meaning. Sourcing material from comics, cartoons, memory, and physical structures, he creates new narratives through recombination and manipulation.
